Hi folks,

I've been playing around with my girlfriend's computer and have managed to post a YouTube video of me playing my first guitar that I built with Sergei de Jonge. I was surprised how well the tone of the guitar was captured by the little mic (at least to my ear).

When I was building it, I kept thinking "Lowden", "Lowden", "Lowden" as if I could impart their tonal character on my first attempt.

Anyway, I'd like to know what you folks think of the sound - no comments on the playing!

Bet you can't build just one. Trying to build a certain sound, responsiveness, and playability is the reason for building, might as well start reaching on your first.

I can play as good, In my dreams that is.

Fantastic job! Great playing AND building. Love the song by the way. I wish I could play 1/2 as good as you. Very nicely done. The guitar sounds good. I'm sure you are very proud. I know I would be. The only criticism I hear in the tone is not enough sustain on the highs. However, it could be the video camera's mic not picking it up. Keep on playing and building!

Hey guys,

Ah shucks, you're all too kind. As for the highs, well the strings (Pearse P/B) were a couple of weeks old and the capo not clamped tightly either. The song goes through notes like a freight train so I don't think anything hangs around long enough to judge sustain. Could be the mic too: it's a tiny Creative Labs lapel mic.

One thing I like about this guitar is the articulation. When I play the same tune on my 00-13 (Engelmann/Brazilian) it seems to get muddy like it's begging me to slow down. I'll post some pieces with that guitar soon - oh, and the classical (Redwood/Ziricote) too!

I've posted a couple of more Don Ross tunes with new strings (Martin SP) but I'm not as impressed with them on this guitar.

Warren, Just the guy whose brain I need to pick. Doing my first guitar. A
classical cutaway. I play mostly fingerstyle(thought if I build a nylon string I
could play more like Chet Atkins or Lenny Breau). What's your thoughts on
neck radius and what did you put on yours if any? Great playing and great
sound.

I'd love the opinion of any other player/builders out there on classical neck
radius for people who don't necessarily play classical.

On the first classical I did, the fingerboard (49.6 mm nut) is pretty much dead flat BUT there is a really funky twist in the neck (maybe 15 degrees). The 000 in the video has both some radiusing (is that a word?) and a twist planed into the fingerboard. I couldn't give you exact values since it was all done by instinct.

BTW, I did post a video with the bearclaw Engelmann/Brazilian 00-13 fretter...
